Overview
The Client, a large university, had a requirement as part of its ongoing strategic goals, to develop and implement a Health and Safety Management system conforming to an internationally recognised accreditation.
Educational establishments can face unique challenges regarding the management of health and safety and have a duty of care to ensure employees, students, contractors, and visitors remain safe when at their premises. Furthermore, they have multiple, varied, and complex hazards associated with the various faculties on site.
Project
To understand the requirements of the project, the Consultant undertook a detailed deep drill gap analysis to establish the status of their existing health and safety management system, policies, procedures, and risk controls and what the requirements were needed to conform the system to the requirements to meet OHSAS 18001 accreditation. As a result of this analysis, a detailed project plan was compiled and timescales for completion were agreed with the client.
As a result of the gap analysis, it was found that there was very little documentation in place. The Consultant developed and implemented a health and safety management system which was aligned to the strategic requirements of the university and to adhere with the requirements of OHSAS 18001.
The revised Health and Safety management system was developed and implemented and involved the formulation of the revised Health & Safety Policy, legal register, the development of procedures, structure, roles and responsibilities, operational controls, emergency requirements, objectives and targets and the development of other supporting documentation such as manuals and forms.
In addition, a risk register was developed, both overall and within each Faculty, detailing and prioritising risk requirements identified.
Bespoke training workshops were delivered to key personnel identified in each Faculty. These workshops included:
- Introduction to Health and Safety
- Hazard identification and Risk Assessment
- Incident reporting
- Internal Auditors
The project timeframe as agreed with the Client was 18 months and was delivered on time and within agreed budgets. The university successfully achieved accreditation.
